Different Strains of Marijuana
The best way to educate yourself about the type of cannabis for your medical condition is to consult the Doctor and the Internet.
Most Physicians will have no knowledge of the types of marijuana as medicine. Although many Medical Societies endorse the use of marijuana as medicine, we have not established a dosing regimen. Paradise Clinic keeps up to date with the literature and will guide you as best as we can. The web has a vast amount of information about what strains of marijuana are available for relief of your particular physical or psychological condition. Remember that different strains of marijuana help different types of medical conditions.
The growing and harvesting of marijuana is a sophisticated process developed by experts. Various strains have been genetically developed to have certain concentrations of THC (THC is the psychoactive component of cannabis and has shown to be medically useful.)
THC or tetrahydrocannabinol is the main psychoactive ingredient in marijuana. It is responsible for the “high” or mind-bending effects of marijuana. It is the main reason dope gets you high. There are four or five variations of THC with slightly different chemical structures but all have similar effects. THC is present in all varieties of marijuana in concentrations ranging from trace to 95% of all the cannabinoids present.
American Cannabis has typically 10-20% THC while Mexican “Brickweed” is about 3-8% THC.
Currently we know of more than 60 known cannabinoids. Most are in very small concentrations and do not contribute significantly to the high. THC, THCV, CBN and CBC are those of the greatest quantity.
THCV (tetrahydrocannabivarin) is associated with very high potency marijuana (grass or cannabis). It has a faster onset but leaves quicker than THC. It is found in Asian and African varieties of marijuana and most likely Colombian (although it it not tested.)
It is slightly less psychoactive than THC.
CBD (cannabidiol) like THC occurs in almost all varieties of cannabis with quantities ranging from trace to 95% of all cannabinoids present. It has analgesic, antibiotic and sedative properties but in its pure form it is not psychoactive. CBD interacts with THV to contribute to the “high”. It is known to antagonize the euphoric effects and potentiate the depressant effects. It delays the onset of the high, therefore, it lasts longer. If your medical marijuana has large amounts of CBD you may think your high is “contemplative”, “dreamlike”, “sleepy” or “Knockout”.
CBN (cannabinol: This cannabinoid is produced by the degradation of THC. If marijuana is stored poorly or through the curing or processing THC is oxidized to CBN. This may also occur when marijuana is pressed for shipping. Sometimes the resin glands that hold and protect THC are ruptured. This exposes the cannabinoids to air which increases the rate of oxidation. Fresh cannabis has very little CBN. CBN has about 10% of the psychoactivity of THC. Colombian grass tends to have high CBN levels. If your drug has a high amount of CBN the high leaves quickly, may start well but never reach a peak. CBN may potentiate TCH’s feeling of “dizziness”, “untogether” or “disorientation”.
CBC (cannabichromine): Although inactive in the pure form it may potentiate the effects of THC.
Nevada is a “grow state” so it is important to learn about the seeds you grow, their origin and the amounts of active ingredient that will results from your grow efforts. Over generations, each population of cannabis adapts to conditions relating to distance to the equator, climate and microclimate.
If your seeds are good quality they will resemble its parents in potency and growing habits. It is important to ask where your seeds come from plus where your marijuana was grown. If you obtain a starter plant from a member of the Nevada Registry make sure to inquire about the strain, origin and whether it is a Hybrid blend.
Confused about the exotic names? Just consider the names of Generic drugs!
The Internet has a wealth of information about marijuana. Become well informed before you use your medicine.
Please learn about how to grow and harvest your new medicine. It can save you money and time. If you are unable to grow your own medical marijuana then have a caregiver do it for you and advise the Nevada State Health Division when you apply for your medical marijuana registry ID card.
As Physicians, we do not provide information on where to obtain medicine. This is your responsibility. Unlike nearby California, who has medical marijuana dispensaries, Nevada, specifically Las Vegas, may have marijuana dispensaries but they are not yet legislated or legal. Again, we must refer you to research the internet or call the Nevada State Health Division who took over the program from the Nevada Department of Agriculture in 2008.
DIFFERENT STRAINS OF MEDICAL MARIJUANA TO TREAT YOUR MEDICAL CONDITION:
Two of the best cannabis family strains are Indica and Sativa. If you grow your medicinal marijuana indoors (Hydroponics) all strains may be used or combined for your medical condition. There will be no need to consider climate or conditions.
Hybrids are very popular and combine both strains. The “Budtenders” of California have described with great precision and science the abilities of growers to produce excellent and potent hybrids. Know before you grow.
Indica produces a more relaxing physical high and is indicated in the treatment of nausea, pain, muscle spasm/spasticity and anxiety. People describe the high as a “body stone”. About the medicinal plants: The leaves are very dark green and broad.
The plants are short and thick. The plant flowers in 8-10 weeks with thick dense flower tops. The flavor is stinky skunk to fruity sweet. This strain of marijuana belongs to Tibet, Morocco and Afghanistan. Indoor growers prefer this strain.
Common names:
White Widow Marijuana
Northern Lights Marijuana
Hawaiian Marijuana
Skunk Marijuana
Much like a new dictionary for wine tasting, the terms for your medicine are colorful but do not doubt the potency or ability to treat your medical condition. Actually, our patients prefer street terms that are easy to remember rather than the complex names of drugs both generic and brand.
Sativa is known to produce a mental high and is ideal to relieve debilitating depression and stress. People describe the high as “Heady or head stone”.
The leaves are very light green and narrow. The plants are tall and thin. These marijuana plants grow very quickly and may reach 20 feet high. Flowering takes 10-16 weeks. The flavor is earthy to fruity. This cannabis strain originated in Mexico, Colombia and Southeast Asia. Outdoor growers prefer this strain.
Common names:
Durban Poison
Haze Marijuana
Purple Haze Marijuana
Mauwie Wauwie
The above information serves as an introduction to medical marijuana. As Medical Marijuana Doctors we wish to educate you and provide information about what your marijuana medicine looks like. It is for education and by no means a complete guide to Cannabis. Research the benefits of marijuana as medicine and learn how it can make a difference in your well being, your pain and your ability to cope with life in new ways.
Your blood pressure, diabetes, anti-depressants, pain medicines, seizure medicine, blood thinners and other meds may need to be adjusted when using medical marijuana.
